BEAT THE HEAT SUMMER MOVING DO’S & DONT’S

Chad Coatney • May 10, 2024

Hello, fellow Floridians! We are approaching the end of summer and we’re pretty sure we can speak for all of you when we say the cooler weather can’t come soon enough! Are we right?

Although the summer months are painfully hot here in Florida, they are some of the most popular months for moving, especially for students, families and busy professionals. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to help your summer move a little less sweaty and exhausting.

First thing is first, we’d highly recommend hiring professional movers. They can take care of the heavy lifting so you can focus on your other moving checklist items. Let’s not add back ache to an already taxing experience. Check out our do’s and don’ts list below. It could be a game-changer!

DON’T FORGET WATER

Moving in the summer heat means you will most likely be thirsty the majority of the time. To avoid over-heating, make sure to keep plenty of water bottles on-hand at the old and new home. If you’ve hired professional movers, it’s a great idea (and a very kind gesture) to offer them and anyone else helping with the move water throughout the move as well.

DO APPLY QUALITY SUNSCREEN

If you’re from Florida or another state notorious for being hot most of the year, you probably stay stocked up on sunscreen. Moving day is no different, especially if you plan on being outside for part or most of the day. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing a water-resistant sunscreen with broad-spectrum coverage as well as one that has an SPF of 30 or higher. Make sure to apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before heading outside. It’s also a good idea to apply it multiple times throughout the day to avoid a sunburn, which may be one of the last things you’d think about amongst the moving day chaos.

DON’T FORGET TO PACK COOLERS FOR PERISHABLES

If you’re staying local, there’s no need to throw the contents of your fridge in the trash. If you have a large cooler, try packing it with perishable items such as milk, juice, fruits and veggies along with ice and/or ice packs to keep them fresh during your move.

DO BRING A PORTABLE FAN

Having a portable fan easily accessible during your move can be a life saver during these hot summer months, especially if the AC in your new home hasn’t been turned on yet. You’ll want to have a fan set up near the entrance of the home and/or where your movers will be loading and unloading the truck. Luckily, portable fans are fairly inexpensive and can be found at plenty of nearby stores including Target, Walmart and Home Depot.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE AMOUNT OF PREP TIME

Let’s be honest, no one wants to make moving a longer process than it has to be, especially in this heat. However, just throwing everything willy-nilly in the back of a truck and taking off will just create more stress and chaos during transit and the unloading process. Moving during the summertime takes careful thought, preparation and planning in order to be successful. Start packing your boxes and bags at least a month ahead of time. Start getting estimates and hire your professional movers several months before.

DO TURN THE AC ON IN YOUR NEW HOME

Picture this: You finally get to your new home; it’s all finally coming together. BUT you walk inside and it’s unbearably HOT. That’s the last thing you want, right? To avoid this situation, we recommend turning your utilities on prior to moving day. If you live nearby and can switch on the air conditioning the day before the move, then make sure to do so right away. Cooling down your new home in advance will make the move and transition much more seamless. If you’re moving long distance, make sure to turn the AC on once you arrive at the new home.

When we talk about eco-friendly moving, we are referring to the methods and materials used during a relocation process that have minimal negative impact on the environment. This approach encompasses everything from reducing emissions by optimizing transportation routes to utilizing recyclable packing materials. In Bradenton, FL , the push for eco-friendly living is evident in many areas of daily life from recycling initiatives to green building regulations. Moving services are no exception, and there's a growing demand for greener moving solutions that cater to this eco-aware populace. Benefits That Reach Beyond Just the Environment Adopting eco-friendly moving practices in Bradenton, FL, contributes to environmental, economic, and social benefits: Environmental Benefits: Reducing your carbon footprint is a primary environmental benefit of eco-friendly moving. By using fuel-efficient vehicles and minimizing waste, eco-friendly moves help in lowering the overall emissions associated with relocating. This is crucial in a world where reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is vital to combating climate change. Economic Benefits: Eco-friendly moving can also be cost-effective. Materials like biodegradable packing peanuts or recycled moving boxes might seem pricier upfront but often prove cost-saving in the long run due to their reusability and durability. Moreover, reducing the weight and volume of items moved can lower transportation costs significantly. Eco-Friendly Strategies Moving can be a daunting task, especially when trying to do so sustainably. However, with careful planning, you can reduce your move's environmental impact significantly. Here are key strategies to consider: Assessment of Items: Inventory Audit: Start by evaluating what really needs to be moved. This process helps in minimizing the volume and weight of your move, which in turn reduces the vehicle's fuel consumption. Essential Only: Focus on taking items that you truly need or hold sentimental value, and plan to leave behind or dispose of items that are no longer useful.
